Parts of a Tower Crane
Several of the most amazing structures around the globe are built using cranes. The newer cranes are used in order to reach higher heights. Tower cranes provide the way to lift and transport tools, building parts and materials around a construction location. There are various components that assemble a tower crane once they are put together. Putting a tower crane together uses different pieces of construction machinery.

Base
The tower crane base is typically made from a steel unit. The base of the unit attaches to a custom pad made of concrete. This set-up provides the structure with stability. Generally, the construction should be engineered and built well so as to operate at optimum safety.

Mast
The tower crane's mast provides the machine with its overall height. The mast is constructed out of individual steel sections which are connected together. The amount of parts determines the crane's height. Typically, a tower crane has a design that allows the mast to grow during construction by adding further parts as the building process goes on. This way the height of the crane can be specified, making certain that it has enough height to efficiently and safely carry out the required work.

Slewing Unit/Top Climber
A slewing unit is located above the mast. This unit houses the machinery and the motor which enables the crane to rotate. A top climber is the piece of equipment which allows the mast to grow. The top climber sits just below the slewing unit. Hydraulic rams inside the top climber allow the slewing unit to be detached from the mast by raising it higher.

Boom
"Boom" is a term that specifically refers to the working arm of a tower crane. The boom is made of steel sections connected together, which extend out from the top of the slewing unit, parallel to the ground. There is a trolley connected to the base which can run the length of the boom. This trolley has the hoisting mechanism.
